JEDDAH, 24 February 2003 — The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) in the Western Region is ready for battle in the forthcoming contest of Toastmasters clubs in Jeddah.

Chosen to represent the PSME Toastmasters Club were Ernesto Cala, Rene Bernales, and Orly Digma.

Cala, the current club president, won in the prepared speech category, Bernales won in table topics, and Digma in the evaluation portion. In table topics, participants are made to make an extemporaneous discourse on a particular topic. In the evaluation contest, participants make a critique on a prepared speech delivered by another participant.

Should any of the three win in the interclub speech contest scheduled at the Al-Hamra Sofitel Hotel on Feb. 28, they will compete in the area contest to be held in Dammam next month, said Ben Guerra, the current governor of the Jeddah area.

A crack at the international contest, usually held in the United States, awaits the winners of the area contest, said Guerra, who was the night’s contest master.

Nilo Lucena, the vice president for education of the PSME Toastmasters Club, said the second-placers automatically serve as alternates. They are called to compete in the event that any winner backs out of the competition.
