DAMMAM, 16 March 2003 — A police officer is in a serious condition after he was attacked by two men who stole his car and almost got away with it, Al-Watan newspaper reported.

The officer had left his car running to go into a grocery store. When he came out, he noticed two men in their 30s sitting in his car. As soon as they saw the officer coming toward the car, the pair drove off.

Luckily for the officer, a Saudi citizen agreed to give chase. The chase ended quickly when the two cars crashed. Before the officer could emerge from the car to arrest the thieves, one of them hit him on the head with a metal object. The Saudi who chased the thieves with the police officer managed to overpower the pair and keep them pinned down until police reinforcements arrived.

The drama did not end there. Soon, four relatives of the thieves arrived on the scene to free them. They got into a fist fight with the police in a desperate attempt to free the pair.

When police reinforcements arrived three of the relatives escaped while the fourth man was arrested, Al-Watan said.
