LONDON, 19 March 2003 — Britain warned its nationals in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen yesterday that they could be terrorist targets if and when a US-led war on Iraq begins.

The Foreign Office issued the warnings after an American and Canadian were shot and killed by a gunman in Yemen.

“In view of the risk of hostilities with Iraq, there is an increase in the threat to British nationals in neighboring countries, including from Iraq,” the Foreign Office said in statements for each of the four countries.

“The threat to British individuals and organizations from terrorism is now high,” it said. “It will rise further in the event of hostilities with Iraq.” Earlier yesterday, the Foreign Office urged British nationals in Bahrain and Jordan to leave the countries.
