DAMMAM, 10 April 2003 — Prince Muhammad ibn Fahd, governor of the Eastern Province, on Tuesday inaugurated a project for the renovation of train carriages here.
Prince Muhammad said the project, which aims to renovate 58 carriages to provide a total of 3,000 seats, was more than 50 percent complete. The prince said he was pleased that the work had been carried out predominantly by Saudi workers and with Saudi material with some cooperation from international companies.
The project also aimed at increasing passenger safety on trains, he said. He added that even comprehensive safety measures could not prevent all accidents. “Accidents happen everywhere, even in developed countries,” he said. The prince also said the expansion of the railway network would bring great economic benefits. Khaled Al-Yahya, president of the Saudi Railways Organization, said the renovation project had not negatively affected passenger movement.
