MAKKAH, 13 April 2003 — Makkah municipality has closed a number of public parks with a view to turning them into private amusement parks, Al-Watan reported yesterday. The move has drawn criticism from several local people who say that these parks must stay open since they are the only way for them to spend quality time with their family. “We now go to open parks since they closed the public parks,” said one resident. “Open parks pose a danger to our children because there is no barrier between the parks and the street. The head of parks in Makkah, Hisham Shili, confirmed that several parks were closed for renovation and privatization.
