One-Hit Willis Helps Marlins Blank Mets

MIAMI, 18 June 2003 — Dontrelle Willis pitched a one-hitter to eclipse Tom Glavine and help the Florida Marlins blank the New York Mets 1-0 in the National League on Monday.

Willis (6-1) struck out eight and walked one in a masterly effort to win his fifth straight start, allowing only a clean line-drive single by Ty Wigginton with one out in the fourth inning.

Wigginton was the only Met to reach base against Willis, drawing a two-out walk in the first.

Ivan Rodriguez’s solo homer in the fourth was the lone run of the game. Rodriguez had two hits while Derrek Lee went 2-for-2 with a walk. Glavine (5-7) went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out four and walked three.

Cubs 4 Reds 3

In Cincinnati, Moises Alou and Eric Karros hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning as the Chicago Cubs edged the Reds 4-3.

Damian Miller had two hits and drove in two runs for the Cubs. Matt Clement (5-6) gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Joe Borowski tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.

Aaron Boone had two hits and drove in two runs for the Reds. Jimmy Anderson (1-3) went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to take the loss.

Brewers 9 Cardinals 4

In Milwaukee, Keith Osik homered and hit a two-run double in a seven-run seventh inning to lead the Brewers past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4.

Osik had three hits and four RBI while Geoff Jenkins also homered for Milwaukee. Scott Podsednik had two hits and drove in two runs for the Brewers.

Curtis Leskanic (3-0) tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the win, despite walking two batters. Cal Eldred (3-2) took the loss, charged with four runs on three hits in just 1/3 inning. Mike Matheny homered and had four hits for the Cards while JD Drew also struck a home run.

Padres 7 Rockies 5

In Denver, Mark Loretta hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning as the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5. Mark Kotsay also homered for the Padres while Sean Burroughs had three hits and drove in a run.

Jay Witasik (1-1) seized the win, getting the final two outs of the eighth inning. Rod Beck pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.

Preston Wilson had three hits and drove in a run for the Rockies while Larry Walker had two hits and two RBI. Jose Jimenez (0-3) allowed the game-winning homer in the ninth.

Crede, Buehrle Combine

to Boost White Sox

Joe Crede hit a three-run homer and Mark Buehrle won for the first time in more than two months, guiding the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 American League victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Buehrle (3-10) won for the first time in 13 starts since April 10, pitching eight strong innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Tom Gordon tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Pedro Martinez made his second start since coming off the disabled list, leaving after five innings and 71 pitches as the Red Sox looked to ease him back into the rotation.

He allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk but the bullpen let him down.

Ryan Rupe (1-1) allowed Crede’s three-run homer and took the loss. He went two innings, giving up three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Josh Paul drove in Chicago’s other run while Willie Harris added two hits. Manny Ramirez homered, had two hits and drove in both Boston runs.

Royals 9 Twins 8

In Kansas City, Raul Ibanez drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Royals to a 9-8 triumph over the Minnesota Twins.

Mike Sweeney hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs for the Royals while Carlos Beltran and Ibanez both had two hits and drove in a run. Kansas City won despite blowing an 8-0 lead.

Mike MacDougal (3-3) blew a save opportunity in the ninth, but recorded the win despite allowing three runs on four hits in one inning. Eddie Guardado (0-2) gave up one run on one hit in the ninth and failed to get an out, taking the loss. Lew Ford hit a three-run homer for the Twins while Matt LeCroy had three hits and drove in two runs.

Mariners 6 Angels 3

In Seattle, Mike Cameron hit two homers as the Mariners defeated the Anaheim Angels 6-3.

John Olerud cracked a two-run homer for Seattle while Bret Boone had four hits.

Joel Pineiro (6-5) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks, to get the win. Arthur Rhodes picked up the last four outs for his second save of the season.

John Lackey (4-6) was the loser, going six innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Garret Anderson had two hits and drove in a run for the Angels.
