Koskie to the Fore as Twins Hammer Royals

KANSAS CITY, 21 June 2003 — Corey Koskie hit two homers and drove in six runs to help the Minnesota Twins rout the Kansas City Royals 16-2 in the American League on Thursday.

Jacque Jones added three hits, including a two-run homer, scored three runs and drove in three more for the Twins, who pounded out 23 hits to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Royals.

Cristian Guzman had four hits for Minnesota while Doug Mientkiewicz and Torii Hunter had three apiece.

Joe Mays (8-4) threw eight strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Kyle Snyder (1-4) was hit for seven runs on 10 hits in four innings and took the loss.

The Twins scored seven runs in the fifth to coast into a 14-0 lead. Raul Ibanez had two hits and drove in a run for the Royals.

In Detroit, Jody Gerut had three RBI as the Cleveland Indians beat the woeful Tigers 10-3. Milton Bradley and Casey Blake homered for the Indians, who swept the three-game series while handing the Tigers their 12th loss in 13 games.

In Chicago, Johnny Damon’s 10th-inning single drove in the winning run as the Boston Red Sox edged the White Sox 4-3.

Athletics 9 Rangers 2

In Oakland, Miguel Tejada had five hits, including a homer, to lead the Athletics past the Texas Rangers 9-2. Eric Byrnes added a three-run homer for the A’s while Eric Chavez also homered and drove in three runs.

Blue Jays 6 Orioles 1

In Baltimore, Vernon Wells struck two homers as the Toronto Blue Jays overcame the Orioles 6-1. Josh Phelps also homered for Toronto. Kelvim Escobar (5-3) allowed one run on four hits over six innings.

Angels 2 Mariners 0

In Seattle, Ramon Ortiz pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings to steer the Anaheim Angels past the Mariners 2-0. Eric Owens had a solo homer and Benji Gil’s sacrifice fly accounted for the runs.

Wilson Ejected After

Second Reds Brawl

Paul Wilson allowed just three hits over seven strong innings before being ejected after a brawl as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in National League action on Thursday.

Wilson (5-4) allowed one run with four strikeouts and one walk, but got into a fight with Kyle Farnsworth after the Cubs reliever threw him an inside fastball as he was trying to bunt in the bottom of the seventh.

Wilson charged the mound and was tackled by Farnsworth, as players from both teams joined the melee.Only the two pitchers were ejected, with Wilson leaving the game with a cut on the bridge of his nose that left blood splattered on his jersey.It was the second fight in a week for the Reds, who were involved in a more serious skirmish with the Philadelphia Phillies last Friday.

In Pittsburgh, Tomo Ohka pitched six strong innings as the Montreal Expos completed their 22-game road trip with a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Phillies 3 Braves 2

In Philadelphia, Jimmy Rollins’ one-out single in the ninth inning drove in the winning run as the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2. Mike Hampton had a no-hitter going until a one-out single by Marlon Byrd in the eighth inning.

Cardinals 8 Brewers 4

In Milwaukee, Albert Pujols hit his 20th homer of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brewers 8-4. Rookie Bo Hart had a two-run triple and a double in his major league debut for the Cards.

Brett Tomko (3-5) gave up two runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings for the win, while Jason Isringhausen got the final out for his first save of the season.
