Early Blitz Helps ChiSox Blow Cubs Away

CHICAGO, 22 June 2003 — Miguel Olivo hit a grand slam homer to highlight a six-run first inning which led the Chicago White Sox to an emphatic 12-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Interleague play on Friday.

The White Sox took advantage of 10 walks issued by Cubs pitchers to score the most lopsided win in the series between the cross-town rivals which started in 1997. Aaron Rowand had three hits and drove in three runs for the White Sox while Carlos Lee had two hits and drove in two runs.

Jon Garland (5-6) picked up the victory, going six innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Shawn Estes (6-6) was clobbered for six runs on two hits in the only inning he pitched — he also walked four — to take the loss. Alex Gonzalez collected a solo homer for the Cubs.

Yankees 5 Mets 0

In New York, Andy Pettitte tossed seven shutout innings as the Yankees beat the Mets 5-0 in the opener of a three-game series between the cross-town rivals. Pettitte (7-6) allowed five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Alfonso Soriano, Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi homered for the Yankees.

Steve Trachsel (5-5) gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and five walks to take the loss.

Blue Jays 8 Expos 4

In Montreal, Cory Lidle pitched a three-hitter over seven innings to join teammate Roy Halladay on the 10-win mark for the season and help the Toronto Blue Jays overcome the Expos 8-4.

Vernon Wells, Frank Catalanotto, Orlando Hudson and Greg Myers homered for the Jays, winners of four straight games. Myers finished with four hits and three RBI while Lidle (10-4) struck out four and walked four.

Javier Vazquez (6-5) allowed five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Endy Chavez homered for Montreal.

Braves 6 Orioles 3

In Atlanta, Robert Fick cracked a grand slam homer and Greg Maddux pitched no-hit ball until the sixth inning as the Braves defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-3.

Fick drove in five runs for Atlanta while Maddux (6-6) went seven innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. A double by Brian Roberts with two out in the sixth ended the no-hit attempt. John Smoltz pitched the ninth for his 27th save of the season.

Sidney Ponson (9-4) gave up five runs on five hits in five innings while walking five. BJ Surhoff drove in two runs for the Orioles.

Marlins 3 Devil Rays 1 (11 innings)

In Miami, Miguel Cabrera celebrated his first major league game by hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Florida Marlins past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 3-1.Armando Almanza (4-4) pitched a scoreless 11th to pick up the win. Al Levine (2-5) took the loss, allowing the game-winning blast.

Astros 12 Rangers 3

In Arlington, Craig Biggio had four hits as the Houston Astros routed Texas 12-3 to hand the Rangers their fifth straight loss. Adam Everett homered for Houston. Wade Miller (5-7) allowed two runs on six hits over six innings.

John Thomson (4-9) gave up five runs on seven hits in seven innings. Alex Rodriguez struck his 18th homer of the season for Texas.

Royals 10 Cardinals 4

In St. Louis, Ken Harvey homered and drove in four runs to lead the Kansas City Royals past the Cardinals 10-4. Desi Relaford and Angel Berroa also homered for the Royals while Raul Ibanez had three hits and drove in three runs.

Jose Lima (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Matt Morris (7-5) surrendered five runs on eight hits over five innings.

Brewers 3 Twins 2 (10 innings)

In Milwaukee, Royce Clayton scored on Juan Rincon’s wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Brewers edged the Minnesota Twins 3-2.

Geoff Jenkins had two hits and drove in the other two Milwaukee runs. Curtis Leskanic (4-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win. Rincon (1-3) allowed one run on one hit in 1/3 inning.

Tigers 7 Rockies 5

In Denver, Eric Munson, Bobby Higginson and Kevin Witt homered to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Colorado Rockies 7-5.

Alex Sanchez added three hits for Detroit. Mike Maroth (2-11) allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits over six innings for the win. Scott Elarton (3-3) gave up six runs on nine hits over five innings. Greg Norton struck a two-run homer.

Padres 5 Mariners 3

In San Diego, Rondell White hit a grand slam homer in the bottom of the ninth to key a five-run inning as the Padres rallied in dramatic fashion to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3.

Ryan Klesko’s bases-loaded walk provided the first run and set the stage for White’s game-winning blast. Mike Matthews (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win. Jeff Nelson (3-1) was the loser, allowing the five runs in the ninth on three hits.

Dodgers 5 Angels 2

In Los Angeles, Hideo Nomo scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 innings as the Dodgers defeated the Anaheim Angels 5-2. Nomo (8-6) gave up two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts before Eric Gagne pitched the ninth for his 28th save of the season.

Ron Coomer, Shawn Green, Dave Ross and Brian Jordan homered for Los Angeles. Jarrod Washburn (6-8) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings. Garret Anderson homered for Anaheim.

Athletics 5 Giants 3

In Oakland, Miguel Tejada homered and drove in three runs to help the Athletics edge the San Francisco Giants 5-3. Aaron Harang (1-1) went 5 1/3 innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Keith Foulke claimed the last three outs for his 18th save of the season.

Damian Moss (7-5) surrendered four runs on seven hits in six innings. Barry Bonds hit his 20th homer.

Pirates 5 Indians 4 (15 innings)

In Pittsburgh, Randall Simon’s homer in the bottom of the 15th inning allowed the Pirates to squeeze past the Cleveland Indians 5-4 in a six-hour marathon twice interrupted by rain.

Simon belted a 1-0 pitch from reliever Danys Baez (0-5) over the center field wall as the Pirates recorded their fifth win in six games.

Salomon Torres (5-2) seized his third win in as many days after scattering six hits in four scoreless innings of relief.

The game at Philadelphia between the Phillies and the Boston Red Sox was rained out and rescheduled for September 1.

Cintron’s Late Homer

Gives Reds the Blues

Alex Cintron hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-5 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds in the only National League game played Friday.

Tony Womack and Robby Hammock also homered for the Diamondbacks while Jose Valverde (1-0) recorded three outs for the win. Scott Williamson (4-3) gave up the winning homer. Jose Guillen homered and drove in three runs for the Reds. It was the 12th consecutive victory for the Diamondbacks over the Reds.
