Nomo Keeps Giants at Bay as Dodgers Avoid Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO, 27 June 2003 — Hideo Nomo tossed a two-hitter over seven innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers avoided a three-game series sweep by blanking the San Francisco Giants 6-0 in National League action on Wednesday.

The Dodgers pounded out 16 hits to support Nomo’s brilliant pitching as they moved to within a game of the first place Giants in the NL West.

Nomo (9-6) struck out seven and walked two. Wilson Alvarez tossed the final two innings to complete the three-hitter.

Adrian Beltre and Mike Kinkade both homered for the Dodgers, while Jolbert Cabrera added three hits to the Los Angeles attack.Ron Coomer and Cesar Izturis both added two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers.

Padres 7 Rockies 6

In San Diego, Miguel Ojeda homered, had three hits and drove in four runs as the Padres edged the Colorado Rockies 7-6.

Donaldo Mendez added two hits and one RBI for the Padres, while Xavier Nady had two hits and scored three runs.

Pirates 6 Expos 5

In Montreal, Jeff Reboulet had four hits, including a home run, and drove in the winning score with an infield single in the ninth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates edge the Expos 6-5.

Reggie Sanders also hit a home run for the Pirates, who nearly blew a three-run lead when Ron Calloway homered in the ninth inning to draw the Expos to within one run.

Brewers 12 Cubs 6 (10 innings)

In Chicago, Brooks Kieschnick and Geoff Jenkins homered in the 10th inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 12-6 win over the Cubs.Keith Ginter hit a pinch-hit home run for the Brewers in a four-run seventh inning that tied the game at five.

Diamondbacks 3 Astros 2

In Arizona, rookie Lyle Overbay hit a two-run home run in the second inning that helped the Diamondbacks edge the Houston Astros 3-2.

Elmer Dessens (5-4) allowed a pair of runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings and Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save.

Phillies 8 Braves 1

In Atlanta, Mike Lieberthal had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning to help the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-1 win over the Braves. Vicente Padilla (6-7) held the Braves to one run and four hits in a seven-inning starts and Bobby Abreu was three-for-four and scored three times in the win.

Mets 6 Marlins 3

In New York, shortstop Jose Reyes drove in three runs, including the game-winner with a two-run single in the sixth inning to help the Mets double the Florida Marlins 6-3.

Steve Trachsel (6-5) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings and Armando Benitez struck out three batters in the final two innings for his 18th save.

Cardinals 9 Reds 6

In St. Louis, Jim Edmonds had two hits, including an RBI double in the second inning that brought in the winning run to give the Cardinals a 9-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Edmonds, Bo Hart — with his first major league homer _ and Scott Rolen each hit solo shots in the first inning after Ken Griffey Jr. had given the Reds an early lead with a three-run homer in the top of the first.

Eckstein Inspires Angels

Victory Over Mariners

In Anaheim, David Eckstein had four hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs as the Anaheim Angels cooled off the Seattle Mariners 6-3 in American League action on Wednesday.

Shawn Wooten also homered for the Angels and drove in two runs, while Garret Anderson added three hits to the Anaheim attack.Ramon Ortiz (9-5) got the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Troy Percival’s scoreless ninth earned him his 13th save.

Jamie Moyer (10-5) lost to Ortiz for the second straight time. He went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Rangers 9 Athletics 8

In Texas, Rafael Palmeiro hit a pair of home runs to power the Rangers to a 9-8 win over the Oakland A’s.

Francisco Cordero (3-6) won for the first time in more than a month with a scoreless inning of relief and Ugueth Urbina gave up two runs in the ninth inning before closing the game with his 20th save.

Twins 6 White Sox 5 (11 innings)

In Minnesota, Jacque Jones homered in the 11th inning to lift the Twins to a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. Jones had three hits, including a two-run double that tied the game in the sixth inning and Eddie Guardado (1-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief.

Royals 3 Indians 1 (10 innings)

In Cleveland, rookie Angel Berroa had an RBI single and then scored a run in the 10th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-1 win over the Indians. Jason Gilfillan (2-0) pitched an inning of scoreless relief and Mike MacDougal retired the side in the 10th inning for his 18th save.

Orioles 9 Blue Jays 2

In Toronto, Jay Gibbons had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-2 win over the Blue Jays. Sidney Ponson (10-4) worked his third complete game of the season, allowing two runs and 10 hits while striking out five batters.

Red Sox 11 Tigers 2

In Boston, Nomar Garciaparra blasted a three-run home run in the eighth inning that capped an 11-2 win for the Red Sox over the Detroit Tigers.

John Burkett (6-3) won his third straight start by holding the Tigers to one run and four hits in six innings.

Yankees 8 Devil Rays 5

In Tampa Bay, Hideki Matsui drove in three runs, including a pair with a first inning double, to help the New York Yankees to an 8-5 win over the Devil Rays.

Andy Pettitte (8-6) won for the third time in a row despite giving up five runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings. Mariano Rivera struck out two batters in the ninth inning for his 11th save.
