YANBU, 27 June 2003 — Team Seven led by Archie Tim Cabahug and Tariq Mahmoud — captain, and asst. captain respectively — took the much coveted championship title of the Yanbu Kalayaan Cup 2003 round-robin team tennis tournament held at Yanbu, Royal Commission tennis court from May 24 till June 12, 2003.
During the championship game, Nick Ruiz of Team 7 defeated the tandem of Neil Sumagaysay of Team 6 while Johnny De Leon and Bernie Doctor of Team 6 prevailed over the pair of Joel Munar and Phil Tamayo of team 7. The unrelenting serve & volley, and slice backhand of Archie Tim Cabahug coupled with his partner, Nonoy Hernais’ aggressive control of the net outmaneuvered the very strong duo of heavy forehand top-spin hitters Johnny Padagdag and Rene Luna. The score was (7-5, 4-6, 6-3)
The awarding ceremony and dinner followed the championship game. The untiring effort of the committee led by Toto Gonzales was the key behind the success of the tournament. Other members of the committee were: Ver Roque (Trophy), Joel Munar, Buddy Murro, and John Castillo (Food), Jun Dino and Regie Dizon (Umpire).
