Red Sox Rewrite Records in Marlins Mauling

BOSTON, 29 June 2003 — Johnny Damon became just the second major league player in 120 years to have three hits in one inning as he keyed a record setting, 14-run first inning as the Boston Red Sox mauled the Florida Marlins 25-8 on Friday.

The Red Sox set a major league record by scoring 10 runs before there was an out in the first while tying another American League record for most runs in the first inning of a game.

They also tied another major league mark with 10 consecutive at-bats with a hit in the Interleague match-up.

Boston had 13 hits, six for extra bases, and drew four walks in the inning.

The Red Sox sent 19 players to the plate in an inning that took 50 minutes to play.

Damon singled, doubled and tripled in the inning, matching the record Gene Stephens of the Red Sox set on June 18, 1953.

Three National League players also had three hits in one inning, all in 1883.

Manny Ramirez added a three-run homer in the first inning as well. Boston had 28 hits in the game, including five by Damon, who also scored three runs and drove in three more. Bill Mueller also homered and had four hits and drove in six runs, while David Ortiz homered, scored four runs, had three hits and drove in three more.

In Houston, Rafael Palmeiro homered and drove in four runs to lead the Texas Rangers to a 10-7 win over the Astros. Einar Diaz had three hits and drove in three runs for Texas, while Hank Blalock also had three hits. Joaquin Benoit (3-3) allowed four runs on five hits over five innings for the win.

In New York, Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi both drove in two runs to lead the Yankees past the Mets 6-4. David Wells (10-2) allowed four runs on 12 hits over six innings for the win. Dan Miceli came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

White Sox 4 Cubs 3

In Chicago, Jose Valentin homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the White Sox a 4-3 win over the Cubs in a spirited Interleague game between the cross-town rivals. Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee also homered for the White Sox, while Billy Koch (3-4) tossed a scoreless ninth to get the win.

In Toronto, Shannon Stewart’s bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Blue Jays a 6-5 win over the Montreal Expos. Stewart and Vernon Wells both homered for the Blue Jays, while Eric Hinske had three hits and drove in a run.

In Cleveland, rookie Billy Traber tossed seven shutout innings as the Indians blanked the Cincinnati Reds 3-0. Traber (3-4) allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one. Danys Baez tossed a scoreless ninth for his 17th save.

Diamondbacks 8 Tigers 3

In Detroit, Lyle Overbay had two hits and drove in two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks won their ninth straight game, beating the Tigers 8-3. Carlos Baerga and Steve Finley had two hits and drove in a run each for the D-Backs.

Braves 8 Devil Rays 2

In St. Petersburg, Chipper Jones homered and had four hits to lead the Atlanta Braves past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-2, giving Atlanta manager Bobby Cox his 1,500th win with the Braves. Andruw Jones also homered and had three hits for Atlanta, while Gary Sheffield also homered and Rafael Furcal drove in three runs.

In Kansas City, Darrell May tossed seven solid innings to give the Royals a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. May (1-4) allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Mike MacDougal pitched a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.

In Minneapolis, Richie Sexson homered, had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 13-1 rout over the Minnesota Twins. John Vander Wal, Brooks Kieschnick and Eddie Perez all homered to key a 19-hit Brewer attack.

In Anaheim, John Lackey pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball to lead the Angels to a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lackey (5-7) allowed five hits, striking out three and walking one. David Eckstein drove in the winning run with an RBI triple in the seventh that broke a scoreless tie.

In San Francisco, Jerome Williams pitched a seven-hit shutout, his first major league shutout, as the Giants blanked the Oakland Athletics 6-0. Barry Bonds hit his 634th career homer for the Giants, while Pedro Felix homered and added a two-run single.

In Baltimore, Jason Michaels hit a three-run homer in the 17th inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Orioles 4-2. Dan Plesac (1-0) pitched two shutout innings for the win. Hector Mercado allowed one run on one hit in one inning to earn his first save.

In Seattle, Joel Pineiro tossed a four-hitter over 7 2/3 innings to lead the Mariners to an 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres. Pineiro (8-5) allowed two runs while striking out five and walking one. Carlos Guillen homered for the Mariners.

In the lone National League game, Matt Stairs homered, had two hits and drove in two runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 in Pittsburgh. Jason Fogg (4-3) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Mike Williams tossed a scoreless ninth for his 21st save.
