JEDDAH, 11 July 2003 — A Saudi woman and a Syrian male martial arts enthuiast stole the show in the “First PSKAI-PKF Independence Day Invitational Karate Tournament” held at the Al Ahli Sports Complex in Jeddah on June 20.
Budoor Al Sadhan of Riyadh Chapter at Al Manahil Sports & Fitness Center was named “best athlete in the female category” for capturing two individual championship trophies in women’s kata and kumite (sparring). Syrian national Manar Mohammad Dinar of PSKAI Powerhouse Club Chapter of Riyadh was adjudged “best athlete in the male category” for winning the individual championship trophy in the black belt heavyweight event in excellent fashion.
Organized by the Philippine Shotokan Karatedo Association International (PSKAI) under the auspices of Philippine Consulate General Jeddah, the tournament drew more than 200 athletes from 35 different karate clubs in Jeddah and Riyadh.
Ricardo Tacay Hanshi, an 8th Dan Red & White Belt master, founder and president of PSKAI, came all the way from Davao City in the southern Philippines to grace the affair as keynote speaker. He came with his eldest son Bern Rexander Tacay Shihan, a 6th Dan Black Belt holder and current Philippine open-weight karate champion and member of the national team.
Referees were sponsored by Talaat Alam, the venue by Al Ahlam Marina Tourism Gen. Manager Abdulrahman Al Hazmi, while food and drinks were provided by Tropicana Restaurant, Al Tazaj Barbecue, and Pocari Sweats.
The officiating panel included Benjie Ortiz Jr., Palestinian Nihad Al Wohaidi and Syrian Abdullah Bolushi of Riyadh, Adnan Roger Paycana, Mac Tending, Efren Barros, Dodanil Diaz, Alfred Tizon, Max Sapi-e, James Catacutan and Edwin Tulah of Jeddah.
