Several University Branches to Merge

JEDDAH, 14 July 2003 — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd has approved the merger of several university branches into independent institutions, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Khaled Al-Angari told the Saudi Press Agency.

The decision will merge Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University and King Saud University in Qasim into an independent university as well as Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University and King Abdul Aziz University in Madinah as of the academic year 2003-04.

The Taif branch of Umm Al-Qura will also become an independent university. The minister said the new institutions were being formed to allow more high school graduates access to university education.
