TORONTO, 15 July 2003 — Jason Giambi homered and walked twice with the bases loaded as the New York Yankees thumped the Blue Jays 6-2 on Sunday, the last day before the mid-season All-Star break.
Giambi’s blast came off converted closer Kelvim Escobar (5-6), who lasted just 1 1/3 innings.
New York’s Jeff Weaver (5-7), who entered the game with a 5.52 ERA scattered just four hits while striking out seven in eight innings.
All-Star Carlos Delgado drove in both of Toronto’s runs, giving him 97 RBIs before the break, third best all-time.
Only Hank Greenberg (103 in 1935) and Juan Gonzalez (101 in 1998) had more by the mid-season break.

In Cleveland, Magglio Ordonez and Tony Graffanino both belted three-run homers for the Chicago White Sox in their 7-4 win over the Indians. Damaso Marte (4-1) pitched two scoreless innings to notch the victory, before Tom Gordon grabbed his third save.

In Detroit, Dmitri Young’s fourth-inning homer helped the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox, who had won their last five games.
Young’s blast came off Tim Wakefield (6-4), who gave up just four hits in 7 1/3 innings.

In Oakland, Mark Ellis scored the game’s only run with one out in the bottom of the ninth innings as the A’s edged the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 for their fifth straight victory.
Barry Zito lasted eight innings, giving up four hits before Keith Foukle (7-1), got the win with a flawless ninth.

In Anaheim, the Angels won their fifth straight game with an 8-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins, who have now lost eight straight. John Lackey (7-8) got the win on six innings of work, giving up seven hits.

In Seattle, Willie Bloomquist’s grand-slam home run sparked a six-run first inning as the Mariners thumped the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and former manager Lou Piniella 13-2. Bloomquist drove in two more runs with a fifth-inning single.

In Arlington, the Kansas City Royals rode a five-run third inning to an 8-2 win over the floundering Texas Rangers.
