Fogg and Tavares Combine to Bring Down Giants

SAN FRANCISCO, 8 August 2003 — Josh Fogg and Julian Tavares combined on a three-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates upset the San Francisco Giants 2-0 in National League play Wednesday.

Tavarez (1-3) tossed three hitless innings of relief to get the win, striking out two and walking one, as the Pirates shut down the Giants high-powered attack.

Fogg started and went six innings, allowing three hits with one walk and no strikeouts, but left with the game scoreless after six innings.

Pittsburgh finally got enough offense to win when Reggie Sanders hit a two-run double in the eighth inning off newcomer Sidney Ponson, who took the loss.

Ponson (14-7) allowed two runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings in his San Francisco debut, striking out three and walking three, but the Giants could manage just three singles all night.

Cubs 3 Padres 2

In San Diego, Sammy Sosa hit his 25th homer of the season to help the Chicago Cubs edge the Padres 3-2. Kerry Wood (11-8) struck out 10 over 7 1/3 innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks.

Joe Borowski pitched the ninth for his 21st save.

In Los Angeles, Odalis Perez pitched seven strong innings to give the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Perez (7-9) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before going seven innings, striking out eight and walking two, while allowing one run on three hits.

Diamondbacks 3 Expos 2

In Phoenix, Carlos Baerga drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 win over the Montreal Expos. Rod Barajas homered for Arizona while Raul Mondesi had three hits.

Rockies 5 Phillies 1

In Denver, Chin-Hui Tsao tossed a two-hitter over six innings as the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1. Tsao (2-0), the first Taiwanese pitcher in the major leagues, allowed one run while striking out five and walking three.

Braves 10 Brewers 2

In Milwaukee, Marcus Giles and Andruw Jones both homered twice to lead the Atlanta Braves over the Brewers 10-2. Julio Franco also homered for the Braves, while Jones and Giles both had four RBI. Greg Maddux (11-8) won his fifth straight game, tossing six shutout innings while allowing six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

In St. Louis, Rookie Dontrelle Willis tossed eight strong innings as the Florida Marlins stayed hot with a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Willis (11-2) allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Astros 11 Mets 1

In Houston, Jeff Bagwell and Richard Hidalgo both homered and drove in three runs to lead the Astros to an 11-1 win over the New York Mets. Geoff Blum added three RBI for Houston, Lance Berkman had four hits and Adam Everett hit an inside-the-park homer.

White Sox Edge Royals to Close AL Central Gap

Bartolo Colon pitched eight shutout innings before leaving with back pain as the Chicago White Sox moved to within one game of the AL Central Division lead with a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

The White Sox took two of three games from the first place Royals in their series and are now a major-league best 15-5 since the All-Star break.

Chicago has made up six games on the Royals in the span.

Colon (10-9) allowed just three hits and had a 4-0 lead when Tom Gordon came in to start the ninth after Colon’s back woes forced him out of the game.

Colon had seven strikeouts and one walk in a dominating performance. Carlos Beltran belted a three-run homer off Gordon in the ninth to make it 4-3, but Damaso Marte came out to get the last two outs for his eighth save to preserve the victory.

Blue Jays 7 Devil Rays 3

In St. Petersburg, Roy Halladay became the first 16-game winner in the major leagues as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-3. Halladay (16-3) pitched a complete-game nine-hitter, allowing three runs while striking out six and walking none.

Athletics 9 Tigers 3

In Detroit, Eric Chavez hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs to lead the Oakland Athletics past the Tigers 9-3. Adam Piatt also homered for Oakland and drove in two runs. Tim Hudson (10-4) allowed three runs on seven hits over eight innings with six strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win, Oakland’s 10th in 13 games.

Indians 10 Mariners 6

In Cleveland, Travis Hafner homered and drove in four runs to lead the Indians past the Seattle Mariners 10-6. Coco Crisp hit his first homer of the season and had three hits and two RBI for the Tribe, while Milton Bradley drove in a pair of runs.

Twins 7 Orioles 3

In Baltimore, Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Orioles 7-3. Shannon Stewart also homered for the Twins. Kyle Lohse (8-9) went six innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Pat Hentgen (4-6) was the loser, giving up five runs on seven hits over eight innings.

Red Sox 4 Angels 2

In Boston, Pedro Martinez pitched a complete game 10-hitter to lead the Red Sox past the Anaheim Angels 4-2. Martinez (8-2) allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out 11 and walking one.

Nomar Garciaparra homered and had two hits for Boston.
