Schilling Eclipses Maddux to Lift Diamondbacks

ATLANTA, 19 August 2003 — Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks allowed one hit over eight shutout innings to win a classic pitching duel against Greg Maddux in the 2-0 National League blanking of the Atlanta Braves Sunday.

Schilling (7-6) was brilliant, giving up only a first-inning double by Marcus Giles while striking out 12 and walking two as he found his form after being slowed most of the season by injury.

Matt Mantei allowed a ninth-inning single to Gary Sheffield for Atlanta’s other hit but he struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save of the season, completing the two-hitter. Maddux (11-10) was also sharp, surrendering one run on seven hits over eight innings. He struck out five and walked one before Kent Mercker gave up a run on two hits in the ninth.

Alex Cintron broke the scoreless tie with a seventh-inning homer. He then doubled off Mercker in the ninth and scored on Rod Barajas’s single. Cintron had three of Arizona’s nine hits while Barajas and Luis Gonzalez both added two hits.

Phillies 6 Cardinals 4

In Philadelphia, Amaury Telemaco pitched seven solid innings for his first major league win in two seasons as the Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 for their fifth straight victory. Starter Telemaco (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks after being called up from Triple-A Scranton.

Mike Williams picked up the last out for his 27th save of the season while Jim Thome and Pat Burrell had two-run homers during a four-run third inning for the Phillies. Brett Tomko (9-8) went three innings, allowing six runs on six hits. Orlando Palmeiro and Tino Martinez homered for the Cards.

Expos 4 Giants 2

In Montreal, Brad Wilkerson thumped a grand slam homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Expos a 4-2 triumph over the San Francisco Giants. Wilkerson’s second grand slam of the season made a winner of Rocky Biddle (4-5), who pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Wilkerson and Jose Vidro both had two hits for Montreal.

Sidney Ponson (14-9) was charged with three runs on four hits in 8 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking two, but it was reliever Tim Worrell who allowed the game-winning grand slam.

Mets 6 Rockies 4

In New York, Cliff Floyd had four hits and drove in a run to power the Mets to their season-high fifth straight victory, a 6-4 decision over the Colorado Rockies.

Tony Clark homered for New York. Al Leiter (12-6) went six innings, allowing one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks. David Weathers seized the last out for his fourth save of the season.

Jason Jennings (10-11) gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings for the loss.

Dodgers 3 Cubs 0

In Chicago, Hideo Nomo allowed four hits over seven shutout innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the Cubs 3-0. Nomo (14-9) struck out three and walked four. Eric Gagne pitched the ninth for his 41st save without blowing an opportunity, the longest streak of its kind in major league history to start a season.

Jeromy Burnitz had two hits and drove in a run. Carlos Zambrano (11-9) went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Reds 4 Astros 3

In Cincinnati, Juan Castro struck a three-run homer to steer the Reds to a 4-3 win over the Houston Astros. Dernell Stenson also homered for the Reds. Paul Wilson (7-10) recorded the win, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings before Chris Reitsma pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season. Tim Redding (8-11) gave up four runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings. Jeff Bagwell homered for Houston.

Pirates 5 Brewers 2

In Pittsburgh, Reggie Sanders and Tike Redmond belted two-run homers to lead the Pirates past the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2. Josh Fogg (7-7) went 6 2/3 innings for the win, allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Julian Tavarez tossed two scoreless innings for his second save of the season. Wayne Franklin (8-10) gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings to take the loss.

Marlins 11 Padres 7

In Miami, Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and drove in two runs to key a 15-hit attack as the Florida Marlins eclipsed the San Diego Padres 11-7. Derrek Lee homered and drove in two runs for the Marlins while Luis Castillo had two hits and two RBI. Josh Beckett (6-6) allowed two runs on five hits over eight innings before Michael Tejera had the last out for his second save of the season. Adam Eaton (7-9) gave up four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Gary Bennett and Phil Nevin both had two hits and two RBI for San Diego.

52nd Complete Game for Mussina as Yankees Win

In Baltimore, Mike Mussina pitched a complete game three-hit shutout for his fourth straight win to inspire the New York Yankees to an 8-0 blanking of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Sunday.

Mussina (14-6) allowed one runner to get past first base as he collected his 21st career shutout and 52nd complete game. He struck out nine and walked none while retiring the last 14 batters he faced. The Yankees pulled into a five-game lead atop the AL East as Boston lost at Seattle.

Royals 5 Twins 4

In Kansas City, Raul Ibanez and Joe Randa hit back-to-back homers in a four-run third inning to lead the Royals past the Minnesota Twins 5-4. Carlos Beltran drove in two runs for the Royals, who avoided a three-game series sweep. Darrell May (6-6) gave up three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings for the win while Curtis Leskanic pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Indians 5 Devil Rays 4 (12 innings)

In Cleveland, Ryan Ludwick singled in the winning run in the 12th inning after tying the game with a single in the 10th, helping the Indians beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4. Ludwick had three hits and drove in three runs for Cleveland.

Terry Mulholland (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Jesus Colome (3-6) gave up one run on two hits over 1 1/3 innings to take the loss. Travis Lee homered for Tampa Bay.

Athletics 7 Blue Jays 3

In Oakland, Terrence Long had three RBI to lead Barry Zito and the Athletics past Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3. Ramon Hernandez added two hits and two RBI for Oakland. Zito (10-10) allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings with six strikeouts and three walks.

Keith Foulke picked up the last out for his 31st save of the season. Halladay (16-5) went three innings, a season-low, while allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits.

Mariners 3 Red Sox 1

In Seattle, Freddy Garcia pitched a solid 7 2/3 innings as the Mariners overcame the Boston Red Sox 3-1. Garcia (11-12) allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Shigetoshi Hasegawa pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save of the season while John Mabry had two hits and drove in a run for Seattle. Trot Nixon homered for Boston. John Burkett (9-7) gave up three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Angels 11 Tigers 6

In Anaheim, Ramon Ortiz pitched six innings for his 14th win of the season as the Angels defeated the Detroit Tigers 11-6. Ortiz (14-10) allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Adam Kennedy homered and scored four runs for Anaheim while Scott Spiezio also homered. Garret Anderson had three hits and drove in two runs to become the franchise’s all-time hits leader.

Rangers 6 White Sox 4

In Arlington, Alex Rodriguez homered, tripled and drove in three runs to steer the Texas Rangers to a 6-4 triumph over the slumping Chicago White Sox. Jay Powell (3-0) tossed three shutout innings for the victory, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks, as the Rangers won their fifth straight game.
