RIYADH, 20 August 2003 — The Kingdom has declared its support for the nomination of Bangladeshi candidate Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, special adviser to the prime minister for Cabinet affairs, for the post of secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The Saudi decision was officially conveyed in a letter handed over by the charge d’affaires at the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka when he called on Foreign Secretary Shamsher M. Chowdhury at his office on Monday. The Kingdom has informed the OIC Secretariat of the decision and asked it to brief other member states.
Chowdhury holds the rank of Cabinet minister. An alumnus of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., he has a deep interest in international relations and contemporary issues, including those concerning the Islamic world. He has represented Bangladesh at many international seminars and conferences.
Thanking the Saudi government for its support, Bangladesh Ambassador S. K. Sharjil Hassan told Arab News that the Kingdom’s support for his country’s nominee reflects their strong ties across a broad politico-economic spectrum.
