JEDDAH, 15 September 2003 — Two people suffered a number of injuries, some serious, after being involved in a motorcycle accident on Tahlia Street Saturday night. According to witnesses, the motorcycle carrying two passengers was accelerating down a long stretch of road when the driver lost control. There is some dispute among witnesses as to whether a car may have cut off the motorcycle during a speed contest. Both cyclists were wearing helmets which, according to a police official at the scene, may have saved their lives. One victim was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The other was fortunate enough to walk away.
The part of Tahlia Street, between Prince Sultan Street and Malek Road, where the accident occurred is popular with car and motorcycle racers as there are no traffic lights or speed bumps. Cars often drive on the stretch of road at more 160 kilometers per hour — unchallenged by police.
