TRIVANDRUM, 30 September 2003 — Sebastian Paul, an independent candidate backed by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), yesterday won the bitterly contested Ernakulam Lok Sabha by-election from Kerala. Paul won with a margin of 22,134 votes, leaving behind his rival, Congress’ M.O John, whose campaign had been marred by bitter infighting in the party between Chief Minister A.K.
