RIYADH, 10 October 2003 — Kanoo, Kingdom Wings, Al-Mousim and United XI recorded easy victories over their respective rivals in the first round matches of 1st Champion’s Trophy Cricket Tournament for Travel Industry organized by British Airways and co-sponsored by Al-Marai.
In Group A, Kanoo helped by an unbeaten 129 by Tabrez amassed a mammoth 239 for 5 in their stipulated 20 overs against Al-Tayar A. Tabrez and Syed Zakiuddin were involved in a century stand and took Kanoo to a commanding position. Syed Zakiuddin contributed 20 runs.
In reply, Al-Tayar A were bowled out for 117. Tareq, Sohail and Alwyn were the only batsmen to offer some resistance and scored 25, 29 and 25 runs respectively. Syed Zakiuddin returned with figures of 4 for 15 in his 3 over spell. Lakmal took 3 wickets by giving away 12 runs.
In another match Kingdom Wings thrashed Fursan Travel by 9 wickets. Fursan Travel scored 129 for 9 in their allotted overs. Rizwan Tahir, Taher Safi contributed 38 and 24 runs respectively. In reply Kingdom Wings scored the required runs losing one wicket. An unbeaten 98 by Syed Hasnain, who smashed nine sixes and 8 fours in his innings, was the featue of Kingdom Wings innings.
In other matches, Al-Mousim beat Al-Tayar B while United XI got the better of Amer Travels. Al-Mousim aided by Mansoor’s fine unbeaten 101 added 206 for 4 against Al-Tayar B. The other notable scorers for Al-Mousim were Anees 44 and Irfan 33 n.o. Chasing a formidable target Al-Tayar B were shot out for partly 107. Shahlul (21) topscored for Al-Tayar B. For Al-Mousim Azhar bagged 3 wickets conceding 9 runs and Irfan took 2 wickets by giving away 16 runs.
In another match against Amer Travel, United XI first walloped 194 for 6 in their 20 overs with Ghamni scoring a fine 54 and Rizwan contributing a superb unbeaten 81. For Amer Travel Azhar took 2 wickets by giving away 21 runs. Chasing the target Amer Travel were bowled out for 139. Imran 19, Fazal 29, Hasib 21 and Aseela 19 were the main scorers. Farooq took 4 wickets conceding 13 runs and Shahid who took 2 wickets for 17 runs.
In all, eight teams are taking part in the tournament and were divided into two groups. Group A: Kanoo, Al-Tayar A, Amer Travel, United XI, Group B: Kingdom Wing, Al-Tayar B, Fursan Travel, Al-Mousim Travel.
