DALLAS, 19 October 2003 — The Dallas Stars heaped further misery on Capitals netminder Olie Kolzig as they thumped Washington 4-2 on Friday.
Kolzig failed to overturn a winless streak against Dallas, now standing 0-8-1 in nine games against the Stars. The 10-year veteran has wins against every other NHL team.
Dallas had just 18 shots on the night, while Washington tested Marty Turco 25 times. The Stars got goals from Scott Young, Jason Arnott, Philippe Boucher and Bill Guerin, with Brenden Morrow assisting on two of the four.
Matt Pettinger and Robert Lang tallied for the Caps.
Washington has won just two of the past 14 meetings between the teams.
Senators 3 Mighty Ducks 0
In Anaheim, the Ottawa Senators blanked the Mighty Ducks 3-0 to hand last season’s Stanley Cup finalists their fourth straight defeat.Vaclav Varada scored in the opening minute, while Bryan Smolinski and Marian Hossa got third-period goals.
Patrick Lalime turned aside all 27 shots he faced in the Ottawa goal.
MacInnis Sidelined After Eye Surgery
St. Louis Blues captain Al MacInnis underwent eye surgery on Friday and will be sidelined indefinitely, Canadian media reported. The Sports Network (TSN) of Canada reported that he had a partially detached retina. MacInnis has one of the hardest slap shots in hockey and still prefers a wooden stick, unlike many shooters.
Although he played on Thursday in Nashville, he failed to pick up a point.
The Nova Scotia native, Calgary’s first choice in the 1981 draft, has two assists in three games this season.
Injured Hatcher Out for up to Six Months
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Derian Hatcher will be sidelined for four to six months after he tore the ACL on his right knee on Thursday during his team’s 3-2 victory over Vancouver, officials said.
An MRI on Friday revealed the tear.
Hatcher, a Norris Trophy finalist last season, was initially thought to have sprained his knee after colliding with Vancouver Canucks defenseman Bryan Allen and Markus Naslund in the opening minutes of the game. The 31-year-old Hatcher signed a $30 million five-year contract in July with the Red Wings.
