DALLAS, 20 October 2003 — Two-year-old Egyptian twin boys who were separated at the top of their heads a week ago were in “critical but stable” condition, a doctor said yesterday. Dr. James Thomas of the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas said: “We are very pleased with their development.”

Throughout the week, Thomas said everything went according to plan as twins Ahmed and Mohammed Ibrahim recovered from the marathon surgery. There were no complications such as infections or swellings.

He added: “We are still watching for any sign of an infection. But we have had no problems with their hearts or circulation. We are still very optimistic.” The twins had been separated during 34-hour surgery and had opened their eyes and reacted to movement after being woken from drug-induced comas, a doctor said Friday.

But they had temperatures at the weekend and were being given antibiotics. Meanwhile, another team of doctors were preparing to operate on conjoined twin boys from the Philippines at Montefiore Hospital in New York.

Dr. Thomas said: “Both boys open their eyes when spoken to and they are already moving their arms and legs.” They will be disconnected from respirators in the next days.”
