KARACHI, 1 November 2003 — President Gen. Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali held a meeting in Rawalpindi during which they were given comprehensive briefings on the measures taken for the expansion and privatization of the telecommunications sector in the country.
The participants of the meeting included Minister for IT and Telecom Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister for Privatization Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and the chairmen of Pakistan Telecom Authority, Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation Limited and National Telecommunications Corporation.
The meeting discussed at length ways and means to attract foreign investment in the country.
They also examined the various proposals for the expansion for this vital sector and the interest expressed by foreign investors in this field.
They were informed that a number of leading international telecommunications organizations had shown keen interest in acquiring licenses for mobile telephones and other forms of telecommunication.
While expressing their appreciation of the recent reduction in the tariff of international and nationwide telephone call charges, the president and prime minister directed that concrete and visible steps should be taken for providing better services to the subscribers at affordable competitive rates. They said that the process of issuing licenses to the applicants should be expedited and carried out in a transparent meaner.
