EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey, 4 November 2003 — The New York Jets scored twice in the last six minutes to draw level, but they were unable to overcome the Giants who eked out a 31-28 victory on Brett Conway’s field goal late in overtime on Sunday.
It was the Giants’ third overtime game this season, two of which they have won.
Conway narrowly missed from 39 yards early in the extra period, then watched while the Jets’ Doug Brien had his 51-yard attempt blocked.
Kerry Collins threw for two Giants touchdowns, hooking up with Ike Hilliard from six yards and Amani Toomer from 39.
The Giants (4-4) were in a similar position last season before winning seven of their last nine games to grab a wildcard berth. Chad Pennington, making his first start of the season, threw for all four Jets TDs, three times finding Santana Moss.

In Miami, Mike Vanderjagt kicked three second-quarter field goals as the Indianapolis Colts (7-1) rode a 9-7 halftime lead to a 23-17 win over the Dolphins. It was the first time the Dolphins (5-3) had trailed at the break this season. Peyton Manning passed to Troy Walters and Edgerrin James raced a yard for the Colts’ remaining points. Brian Griese found Chris Chambers for one Miami TD, with Ricky Williams scampering three yards for the other.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, three-time MVP Brett Favre, playing with a broken thumb, hooked up with Javon Walker for two touchdowns and found Ahman Green for a third in the Green Bay Packers’ 30-27 win over the Vikings (6-2). The Packers (4-4) racked up 261 rush yards, with Green amassing 137 of them on 21 carries.
Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper threw for two TDs, connecting with Randy Moss and Jimmy Kleinsasser, and ran a yard for a third. It was a rare win for Favre at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, where he is now 3-9.

In Tampa Bay, John Carney booted a 47-yard field goal with just eight seconds on the clock as the New Orleans Saints stunned the error-prone Buccaneers (4-4) 17-14.
Aaron Brooks passed 38 yards to Michael Lewis for one Saints TD and Ashley Ambrose returned an errant Brad Johnson toss 73 yards for the other, as the visitors went up 14-0.
Johnson hooked up with Michael Pittman and Keenan McCardell in the final eight minutes to knot the score at 14-14.
Tampa turned over the ball six times.
Lions 23 Raiders 13
In Detroit, the Lions snapped a six-game losing streak, never trailing in a 23-13 win over the underachieving Oakland Raiders (2-6), AFC champions year ago.
Joey Harrington found Cory Schlesinger from 33 yards early in the third quarter to give the Lions a commanding 17-3 lead.
Jason Hanson booted three field goals for Detroit, the longest from 54 yards.
Ravens 24 Jaguars 17
In Baltimore, the Jacksonville Jaguars had the better of the play but it was the AFC North-leading Ravens (5-3) hanging on to win 24-17. Kyle Boller passed to Todd Heap to get Baltimore on the board after just 1:26, with Chester Taylor scampering 29 yards for another Ravens score midway through the fourth quarter.
Byron Leftwich passed to David Allen with 3:11 to play to bring Jacksonville close.
The Jags (1-7) limited NFL rush leader Jamal Lewis to just 68 yards on 21 carries. Texans 14 Panthers 10
In Houston, the second-year Texans won for the third time, upsetting Carolina 14-10 to hand the Panthers just their second loss of the season.
Back-up passer Tony Banks hooked up with Billy Miller from 20 yards with 9:30 to play to give Houston its first lead of the game. Stacey Mack went a yard up the middle for the Texans’ other TD, with Steve Smith scoring early for Carolina on a 24-yard reception.
Bears 20 Chargers 7
In Chicago, Anthony Thomas scored twice on one-yard runs as the Bears dumped the lowly San Diego Chargers (1-7) 20-7.
Thomas racked up a game-high 111 yards on 31 carries. LaDainian Tomlinson plunged three yards for San Diego’s lone TD.
Doug Flutie, who recently turned 41, saw his first action of the season for the Chargers, going 8-for-11 for 70 yards.
Cowboys 21 Redskins 14
In Dallas, Troy Hambrick scored twice on short runs as the Cowboys overcame four first-half turnovers to defeat the Washington Redskins 21-14. Quincy Carter hooked up with Terry Glenn for Dallas’s other touchdown, with battered Patrick Ramsey throwing for both Washington TDs.
Ramsey found Taylor Jacobs from 19 yards with just 2:30 on the clock to make things interesting.
49ers 30 Rams 10
In San Francisco, Cedrick Wilson took back the opening kickoff 95 yards to start the 49ers on their way to a 30-10 rout of the St. Louis Rams. First-time starter Tim Rattay then went to work, hitting Terrell Owens, Brandon Lloyd and Tai Streets for San Francisco touchdowns.
Marc Bulger and favorite target Torry Holt combined for 200 yards and the Rams’ only TD.
Seahawks 23 Steelers 16
In Seattle, the Seahawks got fourth-quarter touchdowns from Darrell Jackson and Shaun Alexander in a 23-16 defeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who dropped their fifth straight game.
Tommy Maddox found Hines Ward midway through the final period for Pittsburgh’s lone TD. Josh Brown booted three field goals for Seattle, with Jeff Reed going a perfect 3-for-3 for the Steelers.

In Atlanta, Donovan McNabb threw for a season-best 312 yards and a touchdown as the Philadelphia Eagles edged the Falcons 23-16, handing them their seventh straight loss. Duce Staley went four yards for Philadelphia’s other TD, with David Akers adding three field goals, the longest from 40 yards. T.J. Duckett plunged a yard for Atlanta’s lone TD and kicker Jay Feely was on target three times.

In Tempe, Arizona, Jeff Blake found Freddie Jones and Anquan Boldin for touchdowns as the Cardinals (3-5) upset the Cincinnati Bengals 17-14. Back-up running back Marcel Shipp carried 29 times for 141 yards, the first Card to register back-to-back 100-yard games in 11 years.
