NEW YORK, 4 November 2003 — Karlis Skrastins scored at 1:14 of overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers in National Hockey League play on Sunday.
Colorado overcame a 2-0 deficit after two periods to tie the game with a pair of third period goals before Skrastins beat Mike Dunham with the game-winner in the extra period. Travis Brigley scored his first NHL goal on a power play early in the third period before Alex Tanguay tied the game with 9:06 left in regulation.
David Aebischer made 22 saves for the Avalanche, who played without injured stars Peter Forsberg and Paul Kariya.
Forsberg has missed two games with an injured groin while Kariya has been out six games with an injured wrist. Bobby Holik and Mark Messier scored the goals for the Rangers. Messier has 1,849 career points, one behind Gordie Howe for second place on the all-time NHL list.
Maple Leafs 2 Hurricanes 1
In Raleigh, Mikael Tellqvist made 24 saves to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Mats Sundin and Ken Klee scored the Toronto goals, with Klee’s coming on a two-man advantage. Ron Francis scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes, who have lost three straight games and have won just two of their first 11 games.
Blackhawks 3 Mighty Ducks 1
In Chicago, Michael Leighton stopped 29 shots to lead the Blackhawks to a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Steve Sullivan, Scott Nichol and Kyle Calder scored the goals for the Hawks.
Vaclav Prospal’s goal six minutes into the third period spoiled Leighton’s shutout attempt.
Stars 7 Predators 3
In Dallas, Bill Guerin fired three goals and added an assist to lead the Stars to a 7-3 win over the Nashville Predators.
Jason Arnott, Mike Modano, Niko Kapanen and Jason Arnott all had one goal and one assist for the Stars, who out-shot Nashville 33-24. Marek Zidlicky, Kimmo Timonen and Scott Walker scored the goals for the Predators.
Sharks 2 Thrashers 2
In Atlanta, Marco Sturm’s goal with less than three minutes to play gave the San Jose Sharks a 2-2 tie with the Thrashers.
Scott Hannan scored his first goal of the season for the Sharks and also assisted on Sturm’s game-tying goal. Jeff Cowan and Slava Kozlov scored the goals for the Thrashers, while Pasi Nurminen made 33 saves in goal.
