NEW YORK, 4 November 2003 — While Dale Earnhardt Jr. was running away with the Phoenix 500k race on Sunday, Matt Kenseth was tightening his grip on a first NASCAR Winston Cup Championship trophy.
Earnhardt took the lead with 50 laps remaining at Phoenix International Raceway and easily held off the similar Chevrolet of Jimmy Johnson in a race marred by a record 10 caution periods. The winner, son of the seven-times series champion Dale Earnhardt Sr., led three times for 87 laps in the 312-lap race. Polesitter Ryan Newman finished third in a Dodge.
