LONDON, 6 November 2003 — All samples taken from this year’s world swimming championships will be retested for the new designer steroid THG, the sport’s governing body FINA said yesterday.

All 312 urine samples collected from the swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo and open water swimming competitions from Barcelona will undergo tests for the newly discovered tetrahydrogestrinone. FINA said it had taken the decision to re-test on the advice of its legal and doping experts. The 10th world swimming championships took place in July.

The Olympic and professional sports world was shocked last month when the US Anti-Doping Agency reported that a new undetectable steroid — THG — had been created that would allow elite athletes to pass doping tests.
