JEDDAH, 13 November 2003 — The 7th annual Holy Qur’an Reading Competition will be held tonight at the Philippine Consulate grounds, starting at 9:45 pm.
Ten short-listed contestants, mostly from predominantly Muslim provinces of Mindanao, will vie for the top prize.
A press statement by the consulate said the program will start with the reading of the Qur’an by Ahmad K. Abdulaziz, year 2002 champion, followed by a welcome address by Labor Attaché Nasser Munder.
Vice Consul Jose V. Jacob, acting head of the consulate, will deliver an inspirational message.
Organizers said the objective of the annual competition is to inculcate in the minds of Filipino Muslims the importance and spiritual aspects of reading properly and reciting wholeheartedly the verses from the Holy Qur’an.
In a congratulatory message to the organizing committee, Ambassador Bahnarim Guinomla said: “I hope this will contribute to bringing about greater spiritual awareness and understanding among Filipino Muslims on the values and essence of Qur’anic teachings.
“May it encourage them to gain greater knowledge and wisdom from the Holy Qur’an, enhance better cooperation and unity among them as they internalize its divine teachings, and strengthen their bonds of brotherhood and unity as peace-loving citizens.”
This year’s organizing committee members include Usman Islao, United Bangsaranao Council chairman; Surafah Campiao, president of the UMEA Federation; and Dr. Amilbahar Matingka, president of the Bangsa Sug Expatriates.
