JEDDAH, 9 December 2003 — Here’s an opportunity for Filipino women in Jeddah who are aspiring to earn extra income but who lack the necessary skills and know-how.
The Filipino Women Overseas Workers (Filwow) will be holding a series of seminars on livelihood programs at the Philippine Consulate starting on Dec. 12.
The first scheduled seminar dubbed “Isang Gunting, Isang Suklay Puede ng Maghanapbuhay,” will be held at the consulate lobby on Dec. 12 from 12 noon to 5 p.m., said Filwow chairwoman Evelyn Santos.
The event is being held in cooperation with the consulate, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Ella Oray, a freelance hairdresser and a co-chair of the event, said participants will be taught basic to advance haircutting and hair coloring techniques, free of charge.
“All the participants have to do is to bring their own model or a friend who will also participate in the on-the-spot hairdressing practice,” she said.
Filwow’s seminar on Dec. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., will deal with dressmaking and patternmaking.
Oray said participants are encouraged to bring their scissors, comb, barber’s cape, note pads, pencil, tape measure and other basic needs for their own use.
“Well known hairdressers and couturiers will be invited to share their expertise with our kababayan (compatriot) who want to learn,” she told Arab News.
Other livelihood programs to be featured later include tailoring, photography and reflexology.
Oray said these programs have been chosen because they are deemed easy to learn and practical to apply, particularly for the non-working housewives who wish to make their idle time worthwhile.
“Extra income will come to their doorstep once they’ve mastered any of the offered seminars,” she said.
Interested individuals may call the OWWA office at telephone number 667-0934, or Ella Oray at 052-939711.
