TEHRAN, 15 December 2003 — Iran has invited Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak to Tehran amid signs the two countries are trying to rebuild diplomatic bridges, Iranian officials said yesterday. Iran and Egypt severed full diplomatic ties after the revolution in 1979 and Iran denounced Egypt for its alleged rapprochement with Israel. “Iran has invited Mubarak to attend a meeting of Islamic countries in Tehran in February,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters.
