HYDERABAD, 7 January 2004 — The Andhra Pradesh government yesterday announced the appointment of a new Pay Revision Commission for the one million government employees in the state. The move will entail a burden of 20 billion rupees on the state exchequer.
The decision comes in the wake of the impending elections to the State Legislative Assembly. The state Cabinet meeting, presided over by caretaker Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, discussed the issue and decided to constitute the new PRC.
Briefing newsmen after the Cabinet meeting, Information Minister S. Chandramohan Reddy said “the government will implement the recommendations on new wages as soon as the PRC submits its final recommendations.” He made it clear that no interim relief would be provided to the employees.
It is the second time during his tenure that Naidu has constituted the PRC. Earlier, his government had appointed a PRC in 1998 and implemented its recommendations in the financial year 1999-2000.
The Joint Action Committee of government employees has welcomed the announcement of the new PRC.
