SANAA, 9 January 2004 — Four Italian tourists were lost in strong storms in the Red Sea yesterday prompting a wide-range search-and-rescue operation, port sources told news agencies.
An official at the western Yemeni port of Makhaa said the four tourists were aboard a yacht when the storms struck. The source told DPA that the yacht Catarina-Maka, which is owned by Italian businessman Mariot Patzzili, left the Yemeni shore early in the day carrying three men and a woman.
The yacht was most likely stuck amid strong winds and storms, he said, adding that it had stopped sending signals at midday. “Authorities launched a wide-range rescue operation supported by helicopters,” said the source.
