Jeddah, 10 January 2004 — Sports competitions, musical shows, singing and dance contests were just some of the activities participated by many Filipinos gathered to celebrate the OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) Month at the Philippine Consulate Grounds in Jeddah recently.
The event was highlighted by a children’s singing and dance contest which was topped by International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ) students.
In the “Children Duet Contest”, adjudged champions were Catherine Alcayde and Najmuddin Omar, grade 5 students of IPSJ, for their rendition of the song “One Sweet Day”.
Ians Angels-A, grade 2 students of Al-Hekma International School won the “Spaghetti” dance contest and the Star Dancers, grade 2 & 6 of IPSJ were chosen as 1st runner up.
The other winners were Espera Sister, a second grader at IPSJ, and Ian Angles-B, Preparatory students, Al-Hekma. While Norfa Hajilatif and Florence Leoncio, grade 2 & 6 students of IPSJ was named as “Best Spaghetti Dancers”.
The chosen winners for the “Otso-otso” dance contest were the Star Dancers, grade 6 students of IPSJ. They are: Jintana Yantakosol, Shantelle Salanga, Sherrie Rose Sim, Nadah Mapandi and Najmah Omar of IPSJ. Tailing Star Dancers was D’Tumblers, grade 5 students of IPSJ. They were: Lou Jesric Castolome, Allan Yba?ez, Eric Alea, Karl Acosta and Najmuddin Omar.
Aside from the dance contests, the “Mr. Suave” song interpretation was also held with Fahad Bansuan coming out as the winner.
Apart from their lovely trophies, all contestants went home with giveaways from various sponsors, notably from Samsung, Time/ATMC Computer and Bristol-Myers Squibb, among others.
The board of judges was chaired by Ajid Sayas with Richard Balgos.
A raffle draw was also held with major prize of a computer set and two consolation prizes.
The awarding of winners in the volleyball competition in which four teams competed was also held.
The Saudia Medical Services reigned supreme in volleyball women division, headed by their coach Tony Mahakij Kampol as “Best Coach” while Debbie Arabe as “Most Valuable Player”.
The other winners were Saudia Medical City, Dr Erfan & Bagedo Hospital Saudi German Hospital, and King Abdulaziz Hospital & Encology Center.
Various groups performed song and dance numbers: the TNT Show Band, BMG Dancers and Ms. Kauther Usop & Company, Jojie Laqui and Gaspar Bartumen.
The event director was Rolly Amaranto, Area Lead Promoter, OFWNet Foundation and songwriter of “Awit Abroad Music Album” with Wenfred Castolome as program coordinator.
Willie Ansis and Mario Geronimo hosted the event.
