ADELAIDE, 21 January 2004 — Top Australian sprinter Robbie McEwen won the opening stage of the Tour Down Under cycling race around the streets of Adelaide late yesterday.
The Tour de France star was in a breakaway group of 12 riders that caught the main bunch on the last of 25 laps in the 50-kilometer street race.
As the leaders tried to set up for the final sprint, several where caught among the lapped riders.
McEwen’s sprint rival Graeme Brown was furious after the finish and alleged McEwan’s Lotto-Domo teammates had blocked him during the confusion.
