JEDDAH, 12 February 2004 — Saudi Arabia and Yemen wrapped up talks in Jeddah yesterday over a barrier that the Kingdom is building on the border.

Saudi security officials said the “meetings were ordinary,” without providing further details on the results of the talks, which began Monday.

The negotiations were headed on the Saudi side by Lt. Gen. Talal Angawi, chief of the Saudi Border Guards, and on the Yemeni side by Interior Ministry Undersecretary Muhammad Abdullah Al-Qawsi, officials said.

Al-Qawsi met on Wednesday with Assistant Interior Minister for Security Affairs Prince Muhammad ibn Naif to discuss “security matters concerning the two sister nations,” according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Tuesday during a visit to Cairo that the issue of the barrier would be resolved amicably.

“It is a question that is going to be sorted out in a friendly way between the two countries, and we have not sought mediation by the Arab League,” Saleh said at a joint news conference with Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mussa.
