NEW YORK, 16 February 2004 — Peter Forsberg picked up a goal and two assists and David Aebischer made 28 saves to push the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 victory over the host Detroit Red Wings Saturday.
The win helped Colorado race four points ahead of the Red Wings atop the Western Conference standings. The Avalanche is also tied with Philadelphia for the NHL’s overall points lead.
Joe Sakic and Alex Tanguay both had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who produced three unanswered markers in the third period to sink the league’s best home team. Aebischer made several saves in the first two periods before Colorado took over in the third, out-shooting Detroit 14-9.
Teemu Selanne and Karlis Skrastins scored the other Avalanche goals on Detroit netminder Manny Legace.
Legace pulled off 25 stops as he took over from Curtis Joseph, who is sidelined at least a week with an ankle injury, and Dominik Hasek, out for the season with a groin problem. Steve Yzerman and Jiri Fischer netted for the Red Wings, who had their season-high six-game unbeaten streak snapped.
