TRIVANDRUM, 24 February 2004 — Sikander Bakht, one of the Muslim showpieces of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that leads the governing coalition, and the governor of the southern state of Kerala, passed away late last night at the age of 85. Bakht was put on ventilator at the Medical College hospital here on Sunday, after he contracted a viral infection following an abdominal surgery. Born on Aug. 24, 1918 he graduated from the Delhi University and had participated in many social and political activities.
