Shopping Complex Gutted

KHAMIS MUSHAYT, 14 March 2004 — A large shopping complex was gutted in a blaze which took more than five hours and hundreds of firefighters to put out, eyewitnesses say.

The complex is on Abha road opposite Gharawi Market complex.

Witnesses Muhammad Ali and Zia said the fire started in two shops at around 8 p.m. on Friday night, when they were closed for Isha prayer. The conflagration soon spread to nearby outlets.

Civil Defense and police teams arrived and cordoned off the area. No one was hurt as all staff were out to pray.

The damage is expected to be more that SR20 million, according to Abdullah ibn Hamood, the owner of the building.
