DOHA, 17 March 2004 — National carrier Qatar Airways announced yesterday it would start flying to Melbourne later this year, marking the airline’s first service to Australia. “While we are still finalizing our schedule, commencing services to Melbourne is a key step in Qatar Airways’ plans to become a major international carrier between Australia, the Middle East and Europe,” the airline’s chief executive officer, Akbar Al-Baker, said in a statement.
