JEDDAH, 18 March 2004 — Gulf Advanced Chemical Industries Company has signed a $150 million turnkey contract with Norway’s Aker Kvaerner to build a butanediol plant in Jubail.
Aker Kvaerner will provide engineering, procurement and construction services, including commissioning and start up. The plant will produce 75,000 tonnes of product per annum.
The new plant will be based on technologies provided by Davy Process Technology, Huntsman Corporation and UOP.
The Jubail project is scheduled to be operative by December 2005 and is part of the privately owned petrochemical complex being developed in Jubail by the Saudi International Petrochemical Company.
Butanediol is one of the world’s fastest growing chemicals used in the production of thermoplastic polyurethanes, elastic fibers, pharmaceuticals, solvents, plant protection, coatings and electronic chemicals.
