NEW YORK, 21 March 2004 — Miah Davis scored 19 points to lead the No. 12 seed Pacific to a stunning 66-58 win over fifth seed Providence in the St. Louis Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

That minor upset came later on Friday when No. 9 UAB edged number eight Washington 102-100 in another St. Louis Region first round surprise. Pacific will now meet No. 4 Kansas, which was an easy 78-53 winner over No. 13 Illinois-Chicago.

Other games in the St. Louis Region — and in the other regions as well — went according to plan. Top seed Kentucky had few problems with 16th ranked Florida A&M, winning 96-76. Third seed Georgia Tech struggled but still got by 14th seed Northern Iowa 65-60, while No. 6 Boston College was a 58-51 winner over number 11 Utah. In the East Rutherford Region, No. 3 Pittsburgh survived a shaky start to rally and edge number 14 UCF 53-44.

That was the only close game of that region, as in other games No. 7 Memphis stopped 10th seed South Carolina 59-43, Second seed Oklahoma State beat 15th seed Eastern Washington 75-56 and sixth seeded Wisconsin was a 76-64 winner over No. 11 Richmond.

In the only games in the Phoenix Region, third seed North Carolina State beat LA Lafayette 61-52 and sixth seed Vanderbilt was a 71-58 winner over 11th seed Western Michigan.
