MADINAH, 30 March 2004 — A joyrider killed a 10-year-old boy in Madinah less than two months after the death of two schoolgirls in the city at the hands of a joyrider sparked a Kingdom-wide outcry.
Okaz Arabic daily said little Muhammad was crossing the road with his father when a car appeared out of nowhere, killing him.
The impact left the child’s body shattered, the paper said.
“I heard the sound of the car and then the crash,” the child’s father, Nuwaim Al-Luqmani, told the paper. “I turned round and my son was dead. I took him to the hospital but they told me he was long gone,” he added.
The unlicensed driver had been seen performing stunts in a car two days prior to the accident, according to Col. Siraj Kamal of the Madinah Traffic Police.
He said the man had been arrested on the orders of Madinah Governor Prince Muqrin.
On Feb. 8, a joyrider plowed into a group of high-school girls here, killing two and injuring five as parents and schoolmates looked on.
Minutes before the man had been seen performing handbrake turns in a nearby street.
Prince Muqrin at the time vowed to come down hard on joyriders, and Madinah police increased patrols around schools.
