AMMAN, 28 April 2004 — A 10-member alleged terrorist ring had plans to kill 80,000 people with explosives-laden truck attacks against Jordan’s intelligence agency, the prime minister’s office and the US Embassy in Amman, according to detailed confessions. In an unprecedented broadcast, state-run Jordan Television beamed a 20-minute program in which detainees from Jordan and Syria recounted how they plotted to carry out huge attacks with the use of 20 tones of volatile chemicals. The alleged ringleader, Azmi Jayyoussi, explained how he received $170,000 via Syrian intermediaries in Damascus from a fugitive Jordanian believed to be operating in Iraq, Ahmad Fadheil Khalayleh, nicknamed Abu Mossab Zarqawi.
