NEW YORK, 15 May 2004 — Jason Michaels hit his first home run of the season and Vincente Padilla pitched 6 2/3 solid innings as the Philadelphia Phillies eked out a 4-3 win over the Giants in San Francisco on Thursday.
Padilla (2-4) allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Four relievers finished up to complete a 10-hitter, giving the Phillies two of the three games in the series.
Ryan Madson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning for his first save. Madson induced A.J. Pierzynski to fly out to end the contest after Pierzynski had earlier hit his home run.
Pat Burrell had two hits and drove in a run for the Phillies, who made the most of seven hits. Kirk Rueter (1-4) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Marquis Grissom had three hits for the Giants, while Barry Bonds went 1-for-2 with three walks.
In other games, Carlos Zambrano pitched a two-hitter over eight innings in the Chicago Cubs’s 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Zambrano (4-1) allowed one unearned run with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
LaTroy Hawkins had to come on in the ninth to get the last out to earn his second save after Joe Borowski gave up two runs.
In Milwaukee, Doug Davis threw eight strong innings as the Brewers rallied for the third straight day to beat the Montreal Expos 7-4. Davis (3-2) allowed three unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Danny Kolb got the last out for his eighth save, while Bill Hall homered and Chad Moeller drove in two runs.
In Houston, a mental error by Brad Ausmus allowed the winning run to score in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Florida Marlins a 3-2 win over the Astros.
Juan Pierre tripled home the tying run in the top of the ninth before Ausmus’ miscue led to the winning run. Matt Perisho (3-2) got the win while Armando Benitez pitched a hitless ninth for his 14th save. Octavio Dotel (0-2) took the loss.
In San Diego, Jake Peavy pitched six strong innings, leading the Padres to an 8-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Peavy (3-2) allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Ramon Hernandez and Ryan Klesko both drove in a pair of runs for the Padres.
Williams Recovers to Lead Yankees Past Angels
Bernie Williams homered in his first three-hit game of the season as the New York Yankees recorded a 7-4 win over the Anaheim Angels at the Yankee Stadium.
Williams was hitting just .194 entering the game, with five RBI, and was criticized by manager Joe Torre for not running out a ninth-inning popout that was dropped, leaving him at first base when he might have made it to second.
The five-time AL All-Star responded with a single, double and a home run after arriving at the ballpark four hours before the game to prepare. Jon Lieber (2-1) continued his strong comeback on the mound for the Yankees, allowing three runs on five hits over eight innings. Mariano Rivera got the last two outs for his 13th save.
In other games, Mike Maroth pitched eight sharp innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics. Maroth (4-1) allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk after losing 21 games last season. Ugueth Urbina pitched the ninth for his fifth save, while Ivan Rodriguez homered and Rondell White and Carlos Guillen both had three hits. Mark Redman (2-2) allowed three runs on 12 hits over eight innings to take the loss. Marco Scutaro drove in the lone Oakland run.
Jose Santana pitched six shutout innings, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. Santana (2-0) allowed six hits while striking out five and walking two. Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 10th save.
Ryan Franklin (2-3) allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings. Michael Cuddyer drove in the lone run in the second inning. Carl Crawford had three hits and drove in the game-winning run with a sixth inning single, giving the Tampa Bay Devil Rays a 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers.
In Chicago, Daniel Cabrera pitched six shutout innings in his major league debut, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader. Cabrera (1-0) allowed two hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Jorge Julio pitched the ninth for his sixth save, while Melvin Mora drove in the lone run and had two hits.
In the second game, Paul Konerko hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs to give the White Sox a 6-5 win over the Orioles. Mike Jackson (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win and Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
In Toronto, Orlando Hudson scored a team-record five runs as the Toronto Blue Jays doubled the Boston Red Sox 12-6. Hudson had four hits while Frank Catalanotto also had four hits and added four RBI.
Reid Johnson drove in three runs, while Miguel Batista (1-3) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.
