Shalimar, Red Sea Paints Flying High

JEDDAH, 28 May 2004 — Abdullah's unbeaten 128 and Tariq Jamal's 85 helped Shalimar beat KAIA by 77 runs and openers Shabbir's unbeaten 133 and Liaqat's 54 enabled Red Sea Paints post a grand 142-run victory over Tamar in the quarterfinals of Division I Friday League. In the Consolation Cup for the third place, Kanoo Travels will play Attar Travel after beating Dabbagh and Nestle Milo respectively in the Jeddah Cricket League (JCL) event.

At Nestle Milo ground, Shalimar went on a run spree with stylish opener Tariq Jamal and Naveed ripping the KAIA, league champions in the last tournament, attack apart. Tariq's 85 (7x4) and Naveed's quick 31 (5x4) laid the foundations for Abdullah to build on. Talented and stylish and displaying hard hitting ability, Abdullah was in ferocious form in his 128 (14x4, 6X6) as Shalimar made an imposing 267 for 2 in the allotted 20 overs. Asif and Saeed Ahmed took a wicket each for KAIA.

KAIA began their reply well but could make 190 for 9 in 20 overs. Abrar Mateen 32, Taher Majeed 32, Qasir 29, Shoeb Malik 23 and Abrar Sain 24 contributed. Ashfaq took 3 wickets, Tariq and Mubashir took two wickets each for their team KAIA.

At Attar ground, Red Sea Paints thumped Tamer as Shabbir blasted an unbeaten 133 (14x4), executing shots to every corner of the and his opening partner Liaqath made 54 (6x4, 1x6) to boost Red Sea. His six came off veteran spinner Ahsan Rafey. Saleem contributed 20, Hussein made 14 and extras posted 14 as Red Sea raced to 236 for 3 in 20 overs. Anwar took a wicket while the other two were run out.

Tamer slumped to 94 all out in 17 overs as Almas shone against the solid bowling and fielding of Red Sea Paints with 29 valuable runs. The most successful bowlers were Jabbar 3 for 16, Arif 2 for 20 and Akram 1 for 14 for Red Sea Paints.

Attar Travels to Clash Kanoo Travels

Attar Travels beat a strong Nestle Milo team by 4 wickets as Milo, batting first, scored 169 for 7 in 20 overs, Milo openers Aurangzeb scored 22 and Asim 18. Amjad then accelerated the score with a well-made 50 as Omer too contributed 41 runs. Shamim of Attar took 2 for 23 while Abu Hassan, Moin and Amanullah took one wicket each.

Attar made a dashing start as opener M. Rayeesuddin made a solid 62 (9x4) while Amanulllah 26, Shamim 26 and 18 extras saw them overhaul the target in 19.2 overs. Zahid Qureshi grabbed three wickets while Aurangzeb and Asim took one wicket each for Milo. Kanoo Travels overcame a spirited Dabbagh, who on batting first, 175 for 6 in 20 overs. Khalid made 30 runs, Naseer 29, Shahzad 28,Sajid 18,Nadeem 16 and extras tallied 21. Rashid Khurshid took 2 for 36, while Shoukath, Najam, Shamim Ul Haque and Shoeb took a wicket each for Kanoo Travels.

Kanoo Travels, in their reply, lost opener Rashid cheaply (8), but Captain Majid, the rock of Kanoo Travels, made an unbeaten 62 in his side's win. Najam who made a fine 53 and Urooj, the hard hitting wicketkeeper, made a quick 30 to seal a 7 wickets win in 19 overs. Naseer of Dabbagh took 2 for 25 while Shehzad took the prize wicket of Rashid Khurshid. Kanoo Travels will now clash with Attar Travels in the final of Consolation Cup.
