JEDDAH, 9 June 2004 — Al Noor International School in Jeddah recently marked World Environment Day with a variety of programs. The school also honored its environmental activists — Fathima Rizwana Shamsuddin of Class VII (A) and Ramsheeda of Class VIII (A) for their outstanding contribution to environment protection.

M. Abdul Ali, the principal, opened the day’s activities as well as a science and environment club and emphasized the importance of preserving nature in its diversity. The club marked its beginning with an informative quiz program managed by Jafar Ali and Nizar Hussein of Class VIII (A). Aleema Rameeza spoke on the club’s objectives.

The students of the Malayalam section performed a satirical drama about the devastation of nature. Ramsheeda, Mohammed Bin Hyder and Fathima Shamsuddin presented papers on various topics related to the environment while Ishanath narrated an instructive story.

Meanwhile, N.P. Hafiz Mohammed, a renowned literary figure in Kerala and professor of sociology, opened the school’s debating club recently and stressed the need to learn logical argument and critical thinking. He advised young debaters of the school to work hard to obtain knowledge and quality evidence to support their arguments.

“It is through listening, thinking and writing that debaters learn to identify and structure arguments and determine what kinds of support documentation to look for,” Muhammad said.
