RIYADH, 17 June 2004 — The South African Embassy in Riyadh is holding a ten-day Apartheid Museum exhibition which began yesterday at the residence of Ambassador Abdulhamied Gabier.
The exhibition coincides with Youth Day, which commemorates the Soweto violence of June 16, 1976, Gabier said.
The ambassador said the exhibition consisted of 35 photographs illustrating the apartheid regime in South Africa which was characterized by racial discrimination and inequality.
“The exhibition conveys a universal message about the perilous consequences of racism and discrimination, and the peaceful resolution of conflict through dialogue, negotiation and reconciliation. This message is one which the world needs to be reminded of and never forget,” Gabier told Arab News.
Gabier said the Apartheid Museum was an independent and non-profit organization. It is dependent on funding raised from both private and public sectors which finance its activities and educational programs.
