NEW YORK, 20 June 2004 — Dave Roberts drove in two runs and Adrian Beltre had three hits to help the Los Angeles Dodgers rally to overcome the New York Yankees 6-3 in Interleague play Friday.
The hosts Dodgers fought back from a 3-0 deficit to down the Yankees in the first meeting between the teams since the 1981 World Series. Los Angeles and New York had never before met in Interleague play.
A crowd of 55,207, the largest in Dodger Stadium history, watched the first contest of the three-game series.
Former Yankee Jeff Weaver (5-7) survived a three-run third inning to pick up the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
Three relievers finished up, including Eric Gagne, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save of the season.
The 2003 National League Cy Young Award winner has now saved 80 consecutive games.
Javier Vazquez (7-5) took the loss, giving up five runs, two earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He also made an important throwing error.
Jason Giambi drove in two runs for New York while Bernie Williams had two hits and an RBI.
In San Francisco, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Kevin Millar, Doug Mirabelli and Trot Nixon homered to power the Boston Red Sox to a 14-9 victory over the Giants.
Boston thumped 14 hits to rally from a 7-2 deficit. Marquis Grissom homered twice for the Giants.
In Chicago, Mark Kotsay homered and drove in both runs as the Oakland Athletics edged the Cubs 2-1 to spoil Sammy Sosa’s return to the lineup.
Sosa went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his first game since May 15. Mark Redman (5-3) allowed one unearned run and four hits in eight innings to seize the win.
In Philadelphia, Matt Stairs belted two home runs and Benito Santiago added a three-run blast to propel the Kansas City Royals to a 10-4 victory over the Phillies.
Chris George (1-0) gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Royals won their third straight game by the identical score.
In Pittsburgh, Jamie Moyer pitched six strong innings for the victory and also delivered a two-run single as the Seattle Mariners beat the Pirates 5-4.
Moyer’s RBI were his first in 16 years. Jason Bay had two home runs for the Pirates, who have lost 10 of their last 12 games.
In Montreal, Carlos Lee had four hits and drove in four runs as the Chicago White Sox overcame the Expos 11-7.
Lee finished a triple short of the cycle. Montreal has lost seven successive outings.
In New York, Mike Cameron homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers. Richard Hidalgo went 0-for-4 in his debut with the Mets after being acquired from Houston.
In Atlanta, Cliff Lee pitched six solid innings as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Braves 4-2.
Lee (6-1) allowed two runs on six hits. Casey Blake’s homer broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh.
In Miami, John Wasdin won his first start in nearly six years to help the Texas Rangers snap a four-game losing streak with an 8-1 romp over the Florida Marlins.
Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs for the Rangers while Brad Fullmer cracked a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
In Houston, Pete Munro and three relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Astros blanked the Anaheim Angels 5-0. Jeff Kent drove in three runs to earn Houston manager Jimy Williams his 900th career victory.
In Milwaukee, Ben Sheets tossed a four-hitter over six innings to steer the Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Chad Moeller homered and Keith Ginter drove in two runs for Milwaukee.
In Phoenix, Jose Cruz Jr cracked a three-run homer to clinch the Tampa Bay Devil Rays’s franchise record ninth straight win, 6-2 over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Randy Johnson (9-5) had his six-game winning streak snapped.
In Denver, Todd Helton drove in three runs as the Colorado Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.
Shawn Estes (7-3) allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings for the win. Rafael Palmeiro grabbed his 538th career homer for the Orioles.
In San Diego, Ted Lilly and three relievers combined on a six-hitter to lead the Toronto Blue Jays past the Padres 3-2.
Frank Menechino homered for the Jays, who snapped a four-game losing streak. David Wells took the loss.
In the National League, Albert Pujols led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run as the host St Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds 4-3. The Reds have lost eight straight road games while the Cards have won five in a row overall. Ken Griffey Jr went 0-for-4 and remained stuck on 499 career homers.
