JEDDAH, 15 July 2004 — The director of the Saudi Al-Haramain Charitable Foundation submitted his resignation after only 188 days into his appointment. Dabbas Al-Dabbasi was appointed on Jan. 7 after Aqeel Al-Aqeel was dismissed from the position. His decision to prematurely leave his post was a result of “the freezing of the establishment’s internal accounts and the inability to give charitable support to 52,602 families who benefit from it for three months.”

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Dabbasi implied that he was quitting because he was unable to do anything for those benefiting from the charity. “Perhaps some people think that I’m the reason that their benefits are stalled,” he added.

Al-Dabbasi said he has worked in the establishment for 10 years, only for the sake of benefiting others without seeking anything in return. He added that other offices of the charity outside the country have also been closed.

Al-Dabbasi was unaware of the reason why the establishment has been shut down inside the country. “I don’t know why. I tried to find out the reason but no one is willing to talk and the letters I sent to different areas have met with no response.”
