JEDDAH, 27 July 2004 — Soqour Toyota of Jeddah and Al Alami of Riyadh emerged victorious in the Camry1 MZ 2004 Challenge hosted by Abdul Latif Jameel Company here last week.
The two-day competition was held at Durrat Al Arous. Twenty teams — 10 from Riyadh and 10 from Jeddah — qualified for the event that began with competition in games including skating, football, basketball and driving skills.
The event started with an exciting skating show. The competition was divided into two parts. First, a time trial event, second, an individual skating display where points were awarded for skill, technique and presentation by an evaluation committee. The team of Abtal Al Tahady of Riyadh and Soqour Toyota of Jeddah top with the same score of 6 points.
In a truncated version of soccer, veteran stars of the Kingdom, participated. Al-Wehda goalkeeper Faisal Ba Mehrez and Al-Nasr goalkeeper Muhammad Al-Khojali took part. Each player was given three penalties to shoot. Both Eial Al Hara of Riyadh and Soqour Toyota of Jeddah scored 12 points each.
However, in the basketball event, which saw the participation of Ali Al Maghrabi — the captain of Al-Ittihad basketball team, every player had four chances. First, free throw, second, 3-pointer, third, a shot from inside the circle and the fourth going one-on-one against Ali Al Maghrabi. The team of Eial Al Hara of Riyadh scored five points, while Al Aqrab of Jeddah took seven points.
And in driving skills, Toyota Rally Team Saudi Arabia’s driver Majid Al-Gamdi drove on the autocross and threw down the gauntlet to the participants to beat his time.
Every competitor had the opportunity to drive on the autocross twice to record the best time. The competition reached its peak when the Soqour Toyota player Wa’ael Al Osta won the event with 59 second to gain 14 points, whereas the team of Al Esar from Riyadh finished with 1.13.
The results put Al Alami team of Riyadh on top of the standings with 27. 5 points, followed by Abtal Al Tahady and Eial Al Hara, both with 27 points each. Among Jeddah teams, Soqour Toyota, were first with 33 points followed by Al Aqrab with 28.5 points.
At the awards ceremony, Adnan Al Qahtani, general manager marketing, ALJ, presented the keys of eight cars to the two teams from Riyadh and Jeddah. Saleh Al Deagi, manager, youth welfare office in Jeddah, and other dignitaries attended the event.
Al Qahtani said: “ALJ had fulfilled its responsibilities toward the society and assured that it would continue to support youth activities. He thanked the participants for making this event a success.”
